  • How Does It Work?

The Summer Climbing Competition Series consists of three bouldering competitions. Each event will follow a format, or fomats, unique to that event, and awards will be based for each event on performance in that event. Each format is outlined in the tab below, and will be explained in detail at the beginning of each event as well.

All three competitions are open to all youth age categories and all ability/experience levels. Climbers may participate in any combination of the three events of which the series is comprised.

  • What Are The Formats?

    1ST EVENT: DYNOS, CAMPUSING, & NO-HANDS

    Dynos:

    • There are three styles of dynos:
      • Distance
      • Two-Hand Precision
      • Freestyle
    • Climbers are assigned to small groups. Each group has a set period of time to climb one cluster of dynos that are of the same style.
    • Once time is up, the group moves on to the next style of dynos.
    • Groups rotate through all three styles of dynos, with the goal of completing as many dynos as possible.
    • Each participant is scored on the total number of dynos he/she completes. Falls/attempts are used to break ties.

    Campusing:

    • Participants are assigned a number of boulder problems based on their respective category.
    • The problems are to be climbed by participants without the use of their feet.
    • After each attempt on a problem, participants are given a score based on the highest hold on which they were able to show control with their hands.
    • At the end of the event, each participant will have a high score for each problem they were assigned. A participant’s final score is the total of their high scores. Falls/attempts are used to break ties.

    No-Hands:

    • Participants are assigned a number of boulder problems based on their respective category.
    • The problems are to be climbed by participants without the use of their hands.
    • After each attempt on a problem, participants are given a score based on the highest hold on which they were able to show control with their feet.
    • At the end of the event, each participant has a high score for each problem they were assigned. A participant’s final score is the total of their high scores. Falls/attempts are used to break ties.

    2ND EVENT: ASSIGNED HIGHPOINT

    Assigned Highpoint:

    • Each category is assigned a set of boulder problems.
    • Participants have the entire length of their allotted time to attempt the problems any number of times in any order/combination they wish.
    • After each attempt on a problem, participants are given a score for that attempt on that problem based on the highest hold they were able to show control on with their hands.
    • At the end of the event, each participant has a high score for each problem they were assigned. A participant’s final score is the total of their high scores. Falls/attempts are used to break ties.
    • Scoring Criteria (in order of relevance):
      • Total of highpoint scores
      • Total of the number of attempts made to achieve each highpoint on each problem

    FINAL EVENT: REHEARSAL FORMAT

There will be a preliminary round and a final round, each following the format listed below. Following the preliminary round, a set number of the top placing participants from each category will move on to compete in the final round.

    Rehearsal Format – Rehearsal Period

    • The male and female groups of each of the three Youth Age Group categories are each assigned three to four very difficult boulder problems.
    • Participants have an allotted amount of time to practice climbing all of the problems with their fellow competitors.
    • *Any progress made during the Rehearsal Period will not count towards their final score.

    Rehearsal Format – Performance Period

    • Each competitor has a two minute and 30 second clock to get as high up as they can on each of the boulder problems assigned to their category.
    • A “two minute and 30 second clock” means that each competitor is allowed 2.5 minutes of climbing on each problem with a 2.5 minute rest period between climbing on each problem.
    • For each problem, a participant receives a score based on the highest hold on which they showed control with their hands.
    • A participant’s final score is the total of these scores.

**Please note: All formats are subject to change at any time, subject to the discretion of the PRG. Please call or check back for updated information.
